Fifty Years On

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launch by the (then) USSR. This sparked a massive spending race between the Yanks and the Ruskies to see who could complete the most useless mission. Sending a monkey into space? Brilliant.

I shouldn’t be too hard on the whole space thing though - I do love my Sky TV and without satellites it would be pretty boring to watch! However, I do struggle to see the point of trying to land on Mars when we could be helping to end poverty and human rights abuses.

That’s just my inner idealist coming to the fore though.

I have to agree… Space is all very interesting but I am not sure a monkey really needed to experience it!

Would that be why there was a programme on Animal Discovery this weeka called Astrochimp?

Even better, I thought it looked cool so Sky+’ed it
