V for Vendetta (2005)

V for VendettaIt’s been a while since I reviewed a movie but a couple of nights ago I watched V for Vendetta and was so impressed that I thought I ought to write something.

So the plot is this: In the not-to-distant future (don’t switch offf now, it’s not as cheesey as it sounds), Great Britain has become this tiny enclave free of immigrants, gays, non-Christians and any other undesirables. Basically it is the dream of the BNP. Anyhoo, a mysterious character called only V rises up and on 5th November blows up the Old Bailey. He then forces his way onto the airwaves and stirs up dissent, encouraging people to join him a year later to see the destruction of the Houses of Parliament. As you can imagine, the powers that be are none too chuffed about this and set about finding him.

In the meantime V crosses paths with Evey and a strange relationship develops out of the circumstances that have brought them together. Slowly, and through a series of events revealing both her past and her present, Evey comes to understand V and what he is trying to do. However, the net is closing around them both - can they even survive let alone achieve their aims?

Hmm, I just read that back and it seems a little dull and passé. It really isn’t though. The fact that you never see the face of V behind his mask is genius. The development of his relationship with Evey is brilliant. Natalie Portman is very attractive, er, I mean accomplished as an actress. The sense of oppression is never overplayed but is always present so you almost think “Hmm, this future doesn’t look that bad…”.

There are obvious comparisons to be drawn between the climate of fear we are living in now and the one portrayed in this movie but I can forgive that, along with the few silly plot holes, for the awesomely powerful ending and all-round powerhouse performances.

Easily the best film I have seen this year.

Overall: 8.5/10

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof. ~ V from Movie V for Vendetta
