Frosty Fingers

The last two days have seen the temperature plummet here in the 'Nam. Yesterday I foolishly rode to work in shorts which meant that, when I left work at 6:30pm and it was pitch black and freezing cold, my pastey little pins weren't too happy with me. Still, by the time I had got to Whittington I have just about regained feeling in my legs.

"I shan't be caught out again" I told myself and, once home, set about hunting out my ever-so-sexy posties tracksters. After twenty minutes I gave them up as a lost cause, resigning myself to the fact that I would have frozen legs. This morning I spent another five minutes looking for them. Anne then proceeded to help and found them in about thirty seconds. In one of the places I had looked. Twice. How do women do that? Still, I was very grateful as the air temp was a miserly one degree on the way in this morning.

This week is the first time I have managed to ride for four days in a row and boy do my thighs feel it. Because of my weakling status it was a slow run in the morning but it gave me time to sit up on the bike and check out the scenery. The covering of frost that lay on Cox's Meadow made it look all clean and new and the steam coming off Dowdeswell reservoir brought back memories of the steaming reservoir that we saw in Oz earlier this year. This part of the country really is pretty and even though life in the UK is rubbish a lot of the time you can't argue with the fact that God knew what he was doing when he put this corner of the world together.

I love Winter. I'm not a fan of cold, driving rain but I love frosty mornings and snow (not that we ever really get any). Somehow it makes everything feel fresh and clean. That said, when it comes time to leave the office tonight, my pastey pins will probably complain again that it is far too cold and remind me that I have a perfectly usable car at home.

Ace, good to see that you’re keeping up the commuting :)

I can’t believe that you took time out of your day to validate your trackie-bums.

    Ludicrous.

I love this time of year - just as you see the fog coming off the water in the morning. Wonderful

I hated commuting in the cold winter months..
I used to have to leave the house at 5:30am, that blew, no chance of spotting the ice on the ground, oh the amount of times I limped around the office whilst my goo-knee bonded with the inside of my trouser leg.

Matt - you ever think of using Boo Boo Goo

I decided to walk home today, one hour and 15 minutes later i’m still unsure if it was a good idea. If I had a bike it would be like 20 mins probably, but I have a fear of drivers in Cardiff. Think i’ll stick to the buses.

It’s not so much that I hate clothes sticking to skin, it’s more the fact that peeling them away from the skin means a nice open wound again. Lovely.

I’ve not had icy roads to contend with as yet. That said, If I had to leave the house at 5:30am it wouldn’t matter what condition the roads were in, I would be falling off my bike due to falling asleep in the saddle.

Simon - Walking is good for you. Cycling is betterer fun but doing an hour of walking every day will do you the world of good (and save you at least 25 Welsh pence on bus fares)
