DIY Headset Press
With Cindy's frame all painted up she is ready to start taking components and finally become a proper bike. First on the list was to put the headset cups into the frame without (a) breaking my thumb again and (b) mullering the paintjob. I could have taken it to the bike shop and paid them to do it but I had a much more cunning plan. Here is what you need:
- A car jack (I nicked the one out of Nae's beast before it goes off to the scrap yard due to death by rust)
- Several pieces of wood
- A gap (I used our back gateway)
- A bike frame
- A headset
- A second pair of hands (preferably attached to a willing helper - I managed on my own but it would have been much easier with some help)

Place the jack and pieces of wood in the gap in such a way that there is only enough space for the frame and one of the headset cups in between, making sure you have a piece of wood on either side to avoid marking the frame and headset.
Slowly open the jack, forcing the cup into the frame. Go slowly and make sure everything is square otherwise you could end up mullering your frame (not a good move).
Once one is done, repeat for the other side. Easy.
I shall reclaim my Bikeman moniker once more!
I also couldn’t resist a little bit of branding on the frame - it just looked too clean. I used my very limited signwriting skills to rename her Sin:Dee.

BIKEMAN’S BAAAACK!!!

August 16th, 2006 at 12:15 pmSindy and pale baby blue paint… are you trying to beat Olly on questionable sexuality with bikes? :-p
August 16th, 2006 at 1:56 pmAdjust your monitor - that bike is grey.
Also, I could never beat Olly at that.
August 16th, 2006 at 3:04 pmThat looks like some kind of tortue device!!! What do you and Anne do behind closed doors
August 16th, 2006 at 9:17 pmLoving the bike! Shame it isn’t pink but I guess that would make it a Bar:bee… GUTTED about your fish?!?! What happened?? Sack the lot of them! Our catfish is still growing… :-S Nai xx
August 17th, 2006 at 12:02 am@Sara - That’s just the way your mind works, it’s nothing to do with the activities of the Clay household!
@Nai - Hmm, pink. Not convinced by that. No more fish have died yet but I think I’m going to have to kill another to avoid future infection. I just can’t bring myself to do it as it looks so happy swimming around the tank!
August 17th, 2006 at 9:59 amPink bike… to go with the pink glove and the questionable cycling trousers.
YAY!
August 17th, 2006 at 10:03 amWell, the pink glove is no more (it got nicked - honest) but I still have the postie tracksters. They aren’t pink though.
