Bike Theft Build

This is what is left of my once proud, and pretty good looking, Kona Cinder Cone (once upon a time it looked like this). Having been down to the Police Station, expecting to get back just my frame and a few bits I was pretty pleased to get back almost an entire bike. It's not in great condition. Johnny Criminal has given it the worst paint job in the world and has also completely stripped the forks. The rear wheel is pringled beyond repair and I have a sneaky feeling that I may need to replace the front after they tightened the cones so much that it mullered the bearings and races inside! They also used a 26.8 seatpost instead of a 27.2 and compensated by tightening the seat collar until it was bent and deformed. Idiot.
I went to the large, water-based bike store in town today and asked them to remove the BB. The guy looked at it and said that there was no way they could get it out. I asked him to try anyway, mainly because I thought he was wrong. Sure enough he came back with the frame and BB seperated. Muppet.
This weekend I shall be stripping the frame and re-painting (even though it looks so good right now) it as well as cleaning up all the components ready for reassembly. I may strip the forks down as well although I've never fettled with suspension before so I may chicken out!
So far it's cost me £45 for a new BB, headset, chain and grips. If you have a spare rear wheel that you would be willing to sell me, let me know! It doesn't need to be anything special, something like a Mavic 317 on a Deore non-disc hub is all I'm after. I could also do with a stem and a 27.2 seatpost if you have an old one going spare for a few quid!
As I build it I'll post pics (even if it's only of interest to me) - I still can't decide on a paint job though, maybe I'll paint in black with flames down the frame!
That 26.8 seatpost… it wasn’t a RaceFace XY with a WTB saddle sat on the top was it?
July 26th, 2006 at 11:03 pmOh, and Mozo Pros (those are the same ones aren’t they?) are dead simple inside. Go for it.
July 26th, 2006 at 11:04 pmPaint job… Strip it back to metal, black undercoat, orange base coat. Highlight the basic flame shapes in yellow and lowlight with red.
No one will ever steal it again.
July 27th, 2006 at 7:56 amOlly, it is a Scott post with a Canondale saddle on. I was hoping to buy a shim instead of a seatpost and use it but they don’t make ‘em in that size.
SBG - Still not sure about the paint job. I want it to look good but at the same time want it to look rubbish so that someone won’t be tempted to nick it!
July 27th, 2006 at 9:37 amMy boss says “Get it to a garage and get them to strip it back to metal, then lacquer it with a slightly tinted lacquer.”
It’ll look like a metal bike, and no one will nick it???
