Good Morning Sports Fans
Phew, what a weekend. I have watched three sports and participated in one. I feel so fit that I might pop over the Melbourne for the Commonwealth Games.
Ice Hockey
On Saturday afternoon (having watched the GP qualifying and serviced my bike) I cruised down to Swindon with a group of friend to see the penultimate game of the season with the Swindon Wildcats taking on the Telford Tigers. Now, I've never seen Ice Hockey live before and I didn't really know what to expect. The Wildcats were relentless in the first period and took a 3-1 lead (the Tigers scored only when the Wildcats' keeper made a horrendous error) so we assumed that the game would be a walkover. However, the home side eased off the gas and allowed Telford back into the game. By the end of the third and final period, the score was 5-4 and Telford were playing without a keeper in an effort to get the equaliser. They didn't.

Highlights included the home side having Roger Hargreaves and Roger Moore on their team and the Tigers having a guys called Dumbass (Dumas). Also, the over-zealous home fan who went mental when one of our gang took a photo using a flash - shocking! Once the game had finished we headed back to Chez Oxley for food and crazy card games.
Grand Prix
Sunday saw the F1 season kick off again, this time starting in Bahrain rather than the traditional Australia. Having watched the qualifying on Sunday it seemed that much of the pre-season hype was untrue. Honda didn't have the fastest car. Massa wasn't about to be overshadowed by M Schumacher, Toyota hadn't really improved despite spending squillions of pounds and Alonso has a second career as the poster boy for Dolmio.
With the two Ferraris at the start of the grid it all looked a bit ominous for returning to the form of a few years ago where everyone else was simply competing for second place but it wasn't to be. Button had a rubbish start and never really recovered, coming 4th. Alonso won with the German coming second and the Monotoned, dull, personality-less Raikkonen coming third (particularly impressive considering he started last on the grid).
Football
Sunday afternoon saw a double-whammy of Man Utd v Newcastle Utd and The Arse v Liverpool. As the former kicked of in the snow, I was feeling particularly smug having eaten a mountain of chilli. The feeling increased when Rooney struck his first goal after 8 minutes. Then he scored again after 12 minutes and it was all over for the Magpies. I decided therefore to go for a quick spin on the bike with Olly. However, we did make it back in time for me to see Steven Gerrard complete the most poorly judged back-pass to put Henry through for the match winner!
Mountain Biking
While I would like to kid myself otherwise, watching sport doesn't actually make me fit. Therefore I went up Leckhampton Hill with Olly on the bike. This was not such a brilliant move though due to the fact that my stomach was distended due to the enormous lunch I had eaten. That and the fact that the windchill factor was about minus a badillion. That said, Olly showed me some of the trails I knew nothing of and so the ride was a success.

I really need to do more excercise - last week I bought my first pair of size 36 jeans. I am officially Jabba.
Ride Distance: 9.1 miles
Year Total: 78.4 miles
Oh, and my car has gone in for the dreaded cam-belt service today so I will be at least £650 worse off this time tomorrow. Bugger. I love my car but it is really quite expensive to run sometimes.
[…] and that’s the important thing. No doubt Owen will put some photos up at some point More from Owen.

March 14th, 2006 at 2:03 pmIndeed. There is nothing to be gained from being stick-like, apart from the temporary invisibility when you turn sideways.

You insterestingly forgot to mention England’s memorable performance against France with the lemon shaped ball.
March 17th, 2006 at 4:00 pmKimi is duller than a dull thing.
The English rugby didn’t get a mention because (a) I don’t really follow rugby too closely and (b) when I do, I support Wales.
March 18th, 2006 at 3:51 pmLooks like France’s lemon squeezing in Cardiff was pretty err.. lucky!
