Small Fry
I am very excited. Having seen two of my fish getting jiggy a couple of weeks ago (I just walked in on them, honest) I suspected that the female had become pregnant. Well, it would appear I was correct to think this. At feeding time today, while all the big fish were at the surface, a tiny little character came out of hiding at the bottom! I only saw it very briefly before it went into hiding again but it was definately there! I’m not sure how long it’ll survive as apparently livebreeders like the platies I have are notorious for eating their young but I will keep you updated!
Update - 18:46
Nature is so cruel. I just saw the little tyke down by the front of the tank and was about to say hi when its own mother swooped in and ate it! I am assuming that it was the same one and not another baby fish. Here's hoping that it wasn’t though! Eating your own children, whatever next?
I have one fish, Evil Bob, we did have two but the other one died after being tormented (so Hannah says) by Bob. I say he was just chasing it.
October 7th, 2005 at 10:05 amI had no idea that fish were so inherently cruel. I got the tank so I could feel relaxed as I watched them swim around but it’s having the opposite effect!
October 7th, 2005 at 10:12 amI had no idea fishies did that. I’d expect if from something evil-sounding like a preying mantis or a scorpion, but a fishy wishy?
Next you’ll be telling me there’s no such thing as Santa Claus.
October 7th, 2005 at 12:27 pmMy fish ate a spider once, so nope they aint very friendly, finding nemo was a big lie.
October 7th, 2005 at 12:57 pmFor future breeding ventures, you can buy special tanks within tanks that keep the expectant mother and any newly hatched babies safe from the rest of the tank. You can also buy special baby food for the ‘fry’ (baby fish). If you fish have done ‘it’ once, it means they are likely to do ‘it’ again. I used to have a good link to a fish website somewhere. I’ll try and dig it out for you.
October 7th, 2005 at 2:22 pmP.s. There is no Santa Claus. Sorry Olly. The tooth fairy is definatley real though…..
Cheers for the info Joe. I had no plans for them to breed - they just decided to go for it. I think the tank within a tank could work but seeing as it was their own mother that ate them, it wouldn’t necessarily keep the new-borns safe
I’ll have to keep an eye on them and see how things progress. I was quite taken with the idea of raising fish from birth!
No Santa? I heard that he was real, and the easter bunny but that the tooth fairy was a fake and was really an unemployed milkman dressing up on weekends.
