Handy Font Tool

Turn that font offIn Apple's OS X the font management tool is called Font Book. At first glance this appears to just be something that lets you view what fonts you have on your Mac and get a nice preview of what the text looks like. However, it goes one better than that. I am designing a site at the moment that uses Verdana as its main font. Macs do not have Verdana installed as a matter of course so it means that you have to design with this in mind. However, I installed Windows (!) Media Player for the Mac today and it must have installed Verdana as part of the process. "Great" I thought "Now I have to uninstall/reinstall Verdana every time I want to test a site design". However, a quick root in Font Book reveals that you can disable fonts without removing them. What a great little feature.

I do love discovering little things like this that make my life easier. Nice one Dave Apple.

You really are the font of all knowledge

    Get.

    Out.

Dont tell Olly you use Verdana, he’s not a big fan. I think he prefers web favourite comic sans myself ;-)

Ha ha! Nice. Maybe when I finally get round to finishing the style for this site, I’ll set the main font as Comic Sans - it’ll give it that touch of class that I’ve been seeking.

Now why can’t Jeff Windows include one of those with his OS?

I don’t hate Verdana, I just don’t think it should be used for *everything* :)

  6. Owen Says:

Jeff Windows can afford to not give as much as Dave Apple due to owning half the world.

  7. Olly Says:

Oh, right it’d be anti-competitive or something. You know, like bundling a web browser or a media player with your OS would be. Yes, Dave Apple, I’m looking at you ;-)
